Hillsborough High Lady Terriers Disappoint Themselves Losing To Sickles 59-56

Last night the Hillsborough High School Lady Terriers sought to revenge their December loss to the Sickles High School Lady Gryphons.

The host Lady Terriers came out the gate slowly, lagging closely behind in the first period of play.

Hillsborough took a one point lead with 6 minutes and 31 seconds left in the 2 period placing them on track for a victory.
After taking the lead, which they maintained for most of the game, Hillsborough continued utilizing a 1-3-1 zone thus forcing the much taller Sickles girls to shoot from the perimeter. The defense proved successful against the lady Gryphons who at the start of play had the advantage on the boards.

Leading by as much as 11 points, the Lady Terriers showed much confidence in their coast to coast and fast break scoring.

The Lady Terriers had plenty of opportunities at the charity stripe, but failed to convert their free throws into points when it counted. At one point Hillsborough had the opportunity to score four points at the free throw line after a double technical foul was called on a soon to be ejected Sickles coach.

In an effort to salvage their lead, the Hillsborough coach who did not utilize her bench until one of her players fouled out instituted the old Dean Smith four corners to run out the clock.

This of course sent her players to the line, where they failed to score.

Sloppy play rained down on the Lady Terrier who had opportunities to score but stayed in the four corners until they were either fouled or had the ball stolen.

Sickles took advantage of a now tired Hillsborough team by infiltrating the zone scoring unanswered points and drawing fouls.

Unlike their opponents, Sickles connected at the free throw line and tied the game at 56 with 34.1 seconds remaining. Another free throw gave Sickles a one point lead.

An over anxious Hillsborough who had the opportunity to regain the lead blew free throw attempts and turned the ball over by way of a careless over the head outer bounds pass.

In the final seconds, an air ball shot by Hillsborough gave Sickles a three point win in regulation play.

The final score was 59-56.

Khai Grubbs and Jazmine Hammonds lead Hillsborough in scoring 17 and 14 point respectively for Hillsborough.

Grum scored 23 points for Sickles. Her free throws at the end earned the win for her team. She was followed by R. Smith who scored 19.
