Shannon Washington, a Florida A&M women’s basketball player was fatally stabbed in the neck early Sunday morning. The twenty year old Washington was found stabbed in an apartment on South Adams Street by Tallahassee police who were summoned there at about 2 a.m. Ms. Washington was taken to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where she died.
Police have arrested Starquineshia Palmer, 20, and charged her with first-degree murder in Washington’s death.
The 2009 Sarasota Riverview High graduate, was reportedly stabbed with a kitchen knife during an argument with Palmer, who was visiting for the weekend from Central Florida, police said. Authorities have yet to release information about a possible motive.
According the Tallahassee Democrat Palmer, who was on probation for in Manatee County for driving without a valid license, was at the apartment when officers arrived.
Public records revealed that Palmer lived in Bradenton from at least November 2008 to June 2010.
Denied bail, she remained at the Leon County Jail on Sunday.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to Shannon’s family and members of the Lady Rattlers basketball team,” FAMU president James Ammons said in a statement.
“For Shannon to be killed in the prime of her life is tragic and senseless. She had so much promise as a student-athlete. This is a great loss for the university and our athletic program.”
Washington, a standout basketball player at Sarasota Riverview, earned All-America honors both seasons at Illinois Valley Community College before the shooting guard transferred to FAMU this offseason, according to a university media release.
“It is truly a trying situation to lose a student-athlete that has come to us to further her education and excel at her sport,” Rattlers coach LeDawn Gibson said in a statement.
“As a coach, this is the kind of incident you just hope you never have to deal with: the death of one of your players at such a young age.”
The FAMU Student Government Association had a vigil Sunday evening to honor Washington.
